Optimizing Image Presentation: Refactoring UI Components in Inmobiliaria RK ACM

Managing dynamic visual content is a core requirement for real estate applications, where high-quality property imagery acts as the primary hook for potential buyers. In the Inmobiliaria RK ACM project, we recently focused on cleaning up how we handle media components to ensure a more maintainable codebase.

The Situation

Our Android application relies on various third-party libraries to enhance user experience, particularly for image galleries and sliders. Over time, as we integrated more features, the way we handled external image slider components became cluttered. We had dependencies that were partially implemented, leading to unnecessary complexity and overhead in our layout files.

The Refactor

Rather than forcing a complex library to fit a simple use case, we decided to perform a cleanup of our UI dependency stack. We started by auditing our build.gradle configuration and identifying wrappers that were no longer serving a clear architectural purpose.

By commenting out unused slider library implementations, we achieved several immediate benefits:

  1. Reduced Build Times: Fewer external dependencies mean faster incremental builds for the development team.
  2. Lower Binary Size: Removing unused code paths helps keep the final APK footprint slim.
  3. Improved Maintainability: Reducing the number of external abstractions makes it easier to replace components with native solutions or modern alternatives like Jetpack Compose in the future.

Implementation Approach

When refactoring UI dependencies, it is essential to ensure that the removal doesn't break existing view hierarchies. Our approach involved a simple conditional removal pattern in our Gradle configuration:

// Before: Including heavy external slider libs
dependencies {
    implementation 'com.external.slider:auto-image-slider:1.0.0'
}

// After: Removing to transition to native or newer patterns
// implementation 'com.external.slider:auto-image-slider:1.0.0'

The Takeaway

Don't let legacy dependencies dictate your UI architecture. Regularly audit your build.gradle for libraries that you are no longer actively utilizing. Simplifying your dependency graph today makes it much easier to adopt modern frameworks tomorrow.
